Furrylittlegnome Visits Notre Dame’s Facade

It was around this time, just a couple of years ago, when furrylittlegnome found herself back in Paris. It was cold, windy and rainy, but she was on a mission to show a fellow gnome the major sites and tourist attractions the “City of Lights” had to offer. As we left the Latin Quarter and crossed the Pont de Archeveche, one of the most recognizable cathedrals in the world greeted us.

Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris, FranceLocated on the Ile de la Cite, surrounded by the River Seine, the Cathedral of Notre Dame or “Our lady of Paris” is a Roman Catholic church that showcases the best gothic architecture in all of Europe – if not the world. Construction lasted almost 200 years and was completed in 1345.Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris, FranceThe side view above shows the spire at the center of the cathedral that is about 300 feet high (90 meters) and two towers on the west facade are about 200 feet in height. Notice the use of the flying buttresses to keep the structure sound.

Walking towards the main entrance, there is a spot in front of the Notre Dame where you are officially in the middle of Paris. Gnome always stands here with this wonderful view in the background.Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris, France
Fooled you! No furrylittlegnome in this photo…

A closer look, through all of the pigeons, shows all of the detail of the facade. Statues and gargoyles are in full force – not to ward off evil but to actually support the heavy columns and to serve as water spouts.

Feeling ambitious? Feel free to climb the close to 400 stairs to the top of one of the towers. Furrylittlegnome didn’t have it in her to do it, but maybe you will…

If I had a ‘Bucket List” maybe Paris would be on it. I’ve been in the St. Louis Arch and in the Statue of Liberty’s crown…I bet the view up there would be very nice indeed.

    Thanks for all your visits.

Heads up, likes and regular comments seem to work, but WP is messing with us again and has taken away notifications for replies to replies.

    Thanks for your visits. 🙂

Not sure if I’m going to do Elfje acrostics all month…but I’ve got a few more words picked out 🙂
