What a treat, Furrylittlegnome followers! Gnome just went through some TiVo and found her most favorite episode from the television sitcom called “The Golden Girls” is in her “My Shows” que. Furrylittlegnome has enjoyed many episodes from this show that aired for seven years, but “The Days and Nights of Sophia Petrillo” is over the top. It shows Sophia Petrillo’s spunky side, but it also shows she has a heart of gold.
While three roommates (Blanche Devereaux, Dorothy Zbornak and Rose Nylund) are sitting at home on a rainy day, Sophia Petrillo (Dorothy’s mother and the fourth roommate) is gong to have a productive day.
Dorothy: Ma, where are you going?
Sophia: To the market.
Rose: Why are you going in the rain?
Sophia: The market’s in Miami. If it was in Phoenix, I’d be going in the sun.
Stating to the girls before she leaves the house in the morning, “I’m going to buy a nectarine,” Sophia starts her day doing just that – going to the market to buy a nectarine.
The other ladies lounge in their bathrobes from morning till dusk, sharing stories, talking about men, eating and watching television. They feel sorry for Sophia because in their eyes, buying a nectarine is what she does every day, and they think nothing more. Little do they know, the spry 82 year old Sophia, is busy as a bee.
After going to the market, with her 25 cent nectarine, she heads over to the park where she is the maestro of a jazz band that consists of women her age that play for charity.
Then, it’s time for Sophia to head over to the hospital for an afternoon of volunteering and to see a special patient.
Man: It’s after one o’clock. You’re late.
Sophia: So, dock me.
Man: You do this for free.
Sophia: Then be grateful.
After handing a patient, who is desperate for flowers, an entire cart of flowers (Sophia didn’t want to go room to room delivering them), she then goes to see her little friend, Sam, who is in a wheelchair due to a botched blood transfusion.
Sam: Did you bring me anything today?
Sophia: Don’t I always?
Sam: I thought maybe you forgot.
Sophia: I never forget.
Sam: But I hate nectarines.
Sophia: You have to eat.
Sam: Sophia, it doesn’t matter. You know that.
Sophia: Crazy talk. Comes from not eating enough fresh fruit. Here.
After a long day, Sophia arrives home to find Dorothy, Blanche and Rose on the couch watching television – still in their bathrobes.
Dorothy: We took care of a lot of odds and ends around the house today.
What did you do, Ma?
Sophia: What did I do today? What I do every day – I bought a nectarine!
